The Balsa Fleet

I've given a few models to my kid to play with and a few have had a Viking funeral in the backyard fire pit, but here is the balsa model fleet at this date.

The current balsa fleet. Some boats have been given to my kid as toys, others a Viking funeral in the backyard fire pit.

In sort of book read order: P3 Proa (tiny, 3 meter proa), Gary Dierking Wa'apa Proa 16, Welsh Coracle, Greenland Kayak, Cajun Pirogue, Glen Simmons Glades Skiff, Jim Michalak Jonsboat and an Ozarks Johnboat built from a description on the Greene County Library website, a backup issue of Bittersweet Magazine.

Glades Skiff Model

A couple of years ago, I read a book called Gladesmen: Gator Hunters, Moonshiners, and Skiffers by Glen Simmons and Laura Ogden. It's an account of a South Florida good ol' boy (Glen Simmons) doing some legal and some slightly illicit things back in the Old Florida days. In the back of the book is a description/plan for a Glades Skiff. The Glades Skiff was similar to a river jonboat or pole punt, only with a pointed bow for parting sawgrass as you poled and paddled it. Glen Simmons was one of the last original builders and users of this folk boat type.

Bike to Work Week

Last day of Bike to Work Week. Including coffee rides and a trip to the bike shop, I've commuted 71.3 miles since Monday morning. :)

This week has been Bike to Work Week here in Springfield, MO. As a way of making some free publicity for the week-long event and Ozark Greenways, the Springfield Sunrise Coffee & Bicycle Club met for five straight mornings. I also managed to participate in the work commuting side all five days. I have ridden a total of 71.3 miles since Monday morning and I have a short 1.3 mile trip home planned this evening. It's the first time I've managed to participate all five days. It's been a lot of fun. We've also had a great turnout for coffee every morning. I'm pretty spent, though, having gotten up at ten till 5am each morning to make a ride across town for sunrise.

Monday: Jefferson Avenue Foot Bridge on Historic Commercial Street.

It was a great week. I nearly hit a couple of deer when passing through the Nature Center area, countless rabbits, a chipmunk in my neighborhood and I had an owl scare the crap out of me as it launched itself from a tree I was passing, it was pretty awesome! Yesterday also marked the one year anniversary of me forming the group. The first ride out it was just me and one other guy. Now we have 171 Facebook group members with about two dozen actively participating. Not too bad.

Architectural Flourishes

I took a bunch of pics of architectural flourishes in St. Louis a week ago. Yesterday I started to sketch from them. Here are the first four.

Missouri Meerschaum Corncob Pipe Factory

On the way to St. Louis this past weekend, I detoured by the MM factory in Washington, Missouri, just to take a few pics outside. They no longer give tours, so I had to settle for the selfie and building pics.
