Jonsboat Model

If and when I sell my Sea Pearl, I'm thinking of building Jim Michalak's "Jonsboat" to replace it as the family beater boat. Something to fish and swim from easily while also being fast enough to keep the attention span of the more destination oriented members of my household. At 16'x5', it should make a good little lake boat.

My friend built a Michalak Jonsboat. It's great for two kids, wife, and him, with space for dog or another friend (me). Powered by a 18hp. Bimini for sun protection. It pounds in chop, and the big floor space flexes, but big buttstraps and robust bottom skids help tie it all together. Very stable and economical.

Nice! I figured there'd be a little flex in the floor, with all of that open space. I was thinking along with the buttstrap that I'd also glass everything on the outside below the waterline. That may add some feeling of security, if not stiffness.
