There Went the Wa'apa Outrigger

The outrigger canoe went to a new home today. I have no sailboat for a change, but I have room to build a new one.

I gave away my Wa'apa outrigger. A friend of mine that runs Lindberg's Bar on Commercial Street picked it up yesterday afternoon. I helped him go through the setup a bit, the canoe itself is only about 75% sail ready at the moment. It'll need some work, but he has the book I built it from.

This opens up my garage for other things, projects, boats and general puttering. I'm sad, but excited.

Adios, amiga! You'll be missed!

Color me Jealous! Was it Eric W at Linburg's? Id love to buy or build one myself, perhaps a double outrigger even. That is what I sailed when I was a kid in the Phillipines. Whose plans was that?

Yup. Eric got it. He's been wanting to build one for a couple of years. At one point his wife bought him the book I built it from. He's also built a small skiff before. So, he's got all the potential to bring it back to sailing again.

The Philippine paraws are pretty cool sailboats. The Wa'apa, the outrigger design from above, is a Gary Dierking designed boat based on Hawaiian outriggers, it could easily be converted to something similar to a paraw, though. There's also a 24' trimaran version in his book Building Outrigger Sailing Canoes: Modern Construction Methods for Three Fast, Beautiful Boats.
